| Working in oil on large format canvas, Carol is at heart a colourist exploring the intermingling and interplay of colour, texture and form to create dynamic yet balanced, luminous compositions. While the majority of her paintings might be considered abstract, she has produced series of figurative, still life and imaginative/symbolic works. In her passion for luminosity, she has explored other media, particularly water colour in combination with ink.
Her formative influences extend from the impressionists through the abstract expressionists. Added to this has been the richness and immediacy that comes of having lived in Africa. Her approach and intent is best summed up in the words of Wassily Kandinsky – “The content of painting is painting. Nothing has to be deciphered…“.
Carol studied under Cecily Sash and Robert Hodgins at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, graduating with BA Hons (Fine Art), and taught life painting at Bill Ainslee's Johannesburg Art Foundation. She subsequently studied further at London's Camden Art School, focusing on graphic techniques.
Now permanently resident in the UK following a return to South Africa, she has exhibited her works in a number of galleries in Johannesburg and in Sydney, Australia. Her works are also in private collections in South Africa, the UK, Switzerland, and the USA.
